Compatibility mode rarely works for Max Payne 1 & 2. If you have a quad a duel core processor it can't cope. The process opens in Task Manager but won't actually start.
Follow this fix:
Create a batch file (.bat) in the Max Payne directory and open it in Notepad
Type: start /affinity 1 MaxPayne2.exe
or for Max Payne 1: start /affinity 1 MaxPayne.exe
This means it runs on a single core of the processor... Just open the batch instead of exe.
