I'm not sure but a couple of ideas (not very good) are:

perhaps points, or places on the map where a dealer would give resources which could be transferred to cash for the player who's collectors came to him.

Oil, collectors could go to a drill or tower of some sort and collect the barrels that the oil thingy (don't know name) produces, this fits with generals because it isn't unlimited in real life and also it is something all the collectors could collect. (BTW if C&C 4 units are in how will they get resources etc? I heard they would be in from EA but you know more since it's your mod.)

perhaps a global resource for every faction, they all work on credits so you could modify each factions collectors/harvesters a bit to collect just one resource. The problem I saw with keeping the different resources is that you'd have to program the collectors to collect the different resources for each and every map. This just seems easier for you to make the MOD.
