By that rationale, you wouldn't pay for any game that's licensed an engine from someone else, either?
That a game uses an already existing engine does not lower the value you get for your money -- it heightens it. Why? Because the developers can spend more time building and refining the *gameplay*. Gameplay makes or breaks a game. Graphics and a fancy engine helps - but if a developer decides to spend time making good gameplay instead of a fancy engine, that is All Good in my book.
You might complain that you need to have already bought HL2 to play this "mod". And that may be true for now. But if the developers of Dystopia do what they say they intend, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to license the Source engine from Valve once they've made some mod sales, and release Dystopia as a standalone purchase.
Besides --- would you really have registered here on ModDB and post in a HL2 mod's comment section if you didn't own HL2?
