Survival Update 3

"It is not the strongest of a species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one most adaptable to change."
Update three comes with some big news on my end of the world. Just released today is my last map before CJ's Survival Map Pack is completed and uploaded. Assault On Alderaan (seen below) can be downloaded here or gamefront.com once it's added to the site.
User Posted Image Downloading the map will also give you a heads-up when the survival pack is released - Alderaan will be converted into a survival-type map for the pack.
I'm also glad to say that most bugs and kinks in the survival system are corrected, and only a couple are left to be fixed during the final testing.
The images below are from a map that's divided into three different climate types, not accessible by either area. In this map, the player must defend their three areas by landing units where they're needed most. With only 9 units allowed on the map, they have to divide their forces depending on where their enemy has placed their own units. A very difficult task to overcome, but essential for anyone looking to survive. Below are pictures from one area, a small Naboo city.

Hopefully my next update will come sooner than later considering it will be the last before CJ's Survival Map Pack is released to the public. One last thing: final testing will begin in just a few weeks. I have only a few people who are ready to test, but I'd like a few more. If anyone is interested, send me a message and we'll definitely talk. -CJ-

Survival Update 2

"Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but only for a second without hope."
My second weekly update comes with a good bit of news, and a bit of good news - First, in light of recent gameplay adjustments and breakthroughs, the Survival Map Pack is moving along faster than expected. Glitches and issues in a test map had me stumped longer than expected at one point, but a little bit of editing had shed light on something bigger. Survival gameplay testing is complete, which allows me to produce maps much faster.
Second, I have two maps completed and thoroughly tested. One is very basic (the picture in my last blog.) It is only meant to give players a good sense of what to expect from survival-type gameplay. A tutorial of sorts. The second map is actually a survival version of my very first map Tatooine Gauntlet. Set during a nighttime sandstorm in a Tatooine city, the player must survive against countless waves of Consortium forces, defending their base with Rebel and Imperial units.

I am also creating a survival rate for each mission. For example, surviving a certain mission between 5-10 minutes would give you a 10% survival rate. The longer you last, the higher your rate will be. Everything will be explained and easy to understand in the pack's readme, so be sure to read it. It's what it's there for.
I'm aiming for five, maybe six missions in the release. Two are finished, two are more than 50% complete and two are drawn up. I may also be releasing a bonus map for anyone who can prove a high survival rate for the pack. Haven't chosen which map yet, but it will be worth the challenge.
Well that's it for this week. Next week's update may come with a surprise...

I intend to lower your survival rate.

"On a large enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero."

Recently, EAW maps have been going through an 'evolution' of sorts. The 'survival-type' gameplay has been introduced to us, and a handful of mappers/modders have already released several survival maps. From space to land, it is now possible to defend against a never-ending wave of enemies for hours on end, or mere minutes if things don't go your way. Basic gameplay has already been layed down: Defend your base against waves of enemies with a full selection of weapons at your disposal. With options like that, a player's survival rate is fairly high.
I intend to lower your survival rate.
By giving you only the basic needs to defend a location against an entire army, you must plan ahead. The picture below shows an example of your basic needs: A command center, a shield generator, mining facilities, multiple turrets, a power generator and a research facility.

Starting out with only one soldier and a select amount of credits, players must decide what to build first. Depending on the severity of the mission, some structures should be built before others. There may also be different structures to build depending on the mission.
I intend to make a mappack with multiple missions like this, ranging from small to large-scale survival battles. Each mission will concentrate on different skills to master in order to survive.
More updates coming very soon. -CJ-
