The best units to take out trolls and balrogs are either javelin-throwers or artillery. Since HE only has the latter you could try using ballistae/ catapults. And if none of those are available you can try to pin them down with infantry, then focusing your archers on them or charge with cavalry. Just don't try to duke them out with a melee unit. It will lose 95 percent of the time. Scientific fact!
