After looking into this a little bit more, changing the lighting from Static to Fully Dynamic corrected the CTD upon starting a new game. Hopefully this helps someone else!

I'm trying to play the series for the first time and I heard this mod was nice to have for someone new to the game/series. The installation went well however I am receiving CTD in the loading screen after clicking New Game. I uninstalled AA2 and the vanilla version loads properly.I've read the readme and FAQ. I disabled steam overlay as well as renamed the d3d9 file. I am running windows 8.1.
