Half-Life: The Infected

Mod review

This mod was great. I played it on Lambda1VR on the Quest 2 and it made for a great VR experience. The levels have a nice sense of scale to them and have a lot of nice overhead details that are nice to walk under. The audio design of the levels also sounds very nice in VR.
It was a pretty long mod and definitely one of the hardest I have played. It's not like crazy ridiculous hard, just one of the hardest I have played thanks to the liberal use of OpFor enemies. I keep playing VR-compatible OpFor mods in the hopes that one will have a focus on friendly HECU, but I have yet to play even one mod like that. Unfortunately this mod is no expection, as there are no allies, except for a Barney who can help fight an intense black ops battle if you edit the skill.cfg to give Barneys more health like I do.
My only complaint is there are a few repeat weapons, like multiple melee weapons, and then the revolver and desert eagle, which requires extra time spent scrolling through with the VR controls. The ending also comes very suddenly, I feel like I had a ton of explosives and heavy ammo saved up but didn't get to use them. Otherwise this was a fantastic mod.

Half-Life: Xen-Warrior

Mod review may contain spoilers

Pretty cool. I liked the "Xen Course" and the way the existing levels were repurposed for a different perspective.
It was definitely too short. I was hoping for more battles alongside Xen allies. The rooms with the bullsquid and houndeyes feel pointless since those enemies were made friendly in an update. Although two of the houndeyes would stand still and attack me when I got near. They wouldn't give chase so I don't know if it's an intended feature. It's realistic so it could be a good idea if explained better, since other houndeyes don't attack at all.
I actually played this first on Android. The ending was so sudden, going from a tram to a prison cell with only a fadeout for the transition, that I played it on Steam to see if it was broken on Android (it wasn't). It was cool how you could send the enemy tram into acid, although it's pointless since if you don't you never see them again either way.
The glow on everything was bad. I appreciate the idea but it's not necessary. It wasn't as bad on Android, and the weapons didn't glow at all, but on Steam, the weapons glow and cover a bunch of the screen. You can say r_shellglowfreq 0 to make it less distracting, but I liked it better on Android.
I liked having to do fights with the hornet gun, which I think most people don't use otherwise. I think the only problem with this mod (besides the glow) is that it's too short. Since you recycled existing levels, it would have been nice if you recycled some more. I would definitely have liked for it to keep going.

Half-Life: Sum

Mod review

I wish I knew about this mod before I played the trilogy as three separate mods, lol. I played them on Lambda1VR and had a lot of fun. I think a complete package feels more appropriate. HTC is probably the best mod when it comes to classic HL gameplay. I don't appreciate the sexist stuff, but there is a female protagonist, so I guess that cancels it out, lol. The spectacle of Abeyance was a nice way to end the trilogy. It's really short on its own though so I imagine playing the whole trilogy as one mod is the most satisfying experience.

The Evasion

Mod review

This was a fun if short mod. I do wish there were more friendly human grunts in Opposing Force mods, but I still thought there was a great atmosphere around the creepy static of the military radios, with soldier corpses littered around, making the place feel really abandoned. I played in Lambda1VR and enjoyed the creepy levels and nice sound design. The final battle could have been a little more intense to make me use my ammo, lol.

HTC

Mod review

I can't agree with the sexist title, but it does at least have a female protagonist, so that's something. I definitely enjoyed the classic Half-Life gameplay in unique environments. I played in Lambda1VR and really enjoyed myself. I like the cinematic moments in the mod. The scary part was scary. The Xen segment was also really good. I did get stuck a couple times in the mod. It would have been nice to fight alongside some fellow soldiers at least once, but it was still great being able to fight Opfor enemies in unique encounters.

Autonomy Lost

Mod review

This was a cool mod. It was not as impressive as HTC, but it had some nice-looking environments, like some of the large areas had a nice sense of scale to them. I played in Lambda1VR, so some of the rooms were quite impressive, with nice details in the offices, although I could have done with less mysoginistic posters, lol. Still I had a nice time playing in VR, I only got a little stuck figuring out I had picked up a keycard. I also managed to miss the first magnum and MP5. The final battle was cool. I had a hard time dealing with all the alien grunts in the mod, but they are kind of an underused enemy so I guess it was nice to see them.

Abeyance

Mod review

This was great. I only score in extremes so I choose 10. It was definitely too short, without any exploration gameplay. I played it in Lambda1VR and had a great time experiencing the detailed environments and crazy events. I honestly cheated to beat the final segment, since I was struggling to complete it in VR. It would be nice to play the trilogy as one single mod, since this was so short, but was a really satisfying ending. Definitely not what I was expecting.
