I finally bit the bullet and started a new playthrough, patched, as assaulter. No bugs so far, even runs pretty smooth. The subtitles are there now, and I'm not sure whether it was the class or the patch.
I don't know why but I had endless issues as Recon. Like 1/5th of the weapons did not have names or descriptions, and certain items would ctd. I was almost to pripyat when the game demanded that I get a closed cycle suit, even though I had the SEVA suit since Yanov. Almost makes you wonder if anyone played Recon during the closed beta.
Best advice I can give to anyone: PLAY AS ASSAULTER. Bugs are more likely to be fixed, since more people play as that class, the assaulter weapons aren't nearly as buggy. You don't have the MSPAINT scopes that look like they were done by.... Yeah I'll stop here.

You can use a an online ogg converter, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links but a simple google search should lead you to the same page. Set the audio bitrate to 48 kps, the sampling rate to 44100khz, and change the audio to mono. It's not the exact stats as the original music, but in my experience the files end up SMALLER than the original ones, so theoretically they could up your performance a negligible amount.
PROTIP: For some reason the tracks that are used by default are loud, very loud. Using normal music tends to make it very quiet, to the point where you can only hear if you're trading with the barkeeper. This should be a simple gain adjustment with a program like audacity, however I've grown to enjoy not hearing "SOLJA!!!! SOLJAUH!!!!!" while I'm having Nitro fix my kalash that broke after 70 rounds.
Here's one of the replacements I used, I think veteran stalkerbros will enjoy it. Youtube.com
