So I just recently found out this mod existed, and to my surprise, it appears to be a relatively new mod, so I'm psyched to finally give the game a go with my friend as I've never actually played the game before. I skipped both Quake 2 and Quake 4 while growing up, so I figured it was due time to pay my full respects towards Romero and Carmack.
So FYI, to all you other players who are new to this, just to help where others had failed us, here's what to do in case you encounter the same issues as me and my friend:
Did you encounter an error saying that Intel Graphics weren't supported? From my personal experience, running the game from my Alienware laptop, having both Intel and nVidia graphic-cards myself, you need to force the game to use the nVidia card from the nVidia Control Panel. If your global settings are as mine were, that every game is preferred to run with nVidia, you still need to force the quake2xp.exe to run with nVidia in order to make it work.
Did you encounter an issue starting the game with some text on a grey screen, and returning to Windows? Chances are you're missing the socalled "OpenAL" drivers. Head over to Code.google.com and download oalinst.zip, run the setup, and everything should work, that is, if the issues you had were audio-related.
Also: if you're a Steam-gamer, good-to-know basis, you may unextract the contents of the latest quake2xp into your ...\steam\steamapps\common\quake 2\ and then you may change the quake2.exe to something else, for example quake2.exe.bak, and you can rename quake2xp.exe to simply quake2.exe. That way you may still start quake2xp through steam without adding a nonsteam game as steam will recognise quake2xp as quake 2 and you can still hoard playtime hours.
You're welcome. ;)
