I don't think that grenadiers were armed with any grenade because the term of grenadier on that time were the assault troop used to storm an enemies' position. The assault troop must be tall and strong like the one who throw grenade in 17th century era. In 18th century however, the use of grenade (in an army) was decline because of military tactics development but strongmen were still needed. That is then the assault troops were called "grenadiers".
