"The Eternal Crusade is a war between the major factions of the 41st millennium, all of them unique and opposed to one another. As a player, you’ll create a warrior from any of the available armies and set out to purge the other races from the surface of the planet.
Playable factions at launch include:
Space Marines: Genetically modified super-soldiers created by the Emperor of Mankind to protect the Imperium of Man.
Chaos Space Marines: Space Marines who have fallen prey to the corruption of the Warp and seek the destruction of the Imperium.
Eldar: A dying race of mysterious beings from before the birth of mankind with a mastery of psychic powers.
Orks: Brutal, green-skinned hordes that seek war in all its forms.
Each of the launch factions provides a different experience, reflected in everything from their combat style to their hub zones and even UI."
"Orks barely obey their own Warbosses, which plays into the logic of making them the only free-to-play race in Eternal Crusade. Caron’s thought is that most players will, like Ork Boyz, ignore their superiors’ orders anyway, opting to do their own thing instead as they learn the ropes. They’re a fine starting point for players that will, when they’re ready to obey the orders of the Imperium, ideally pay a little to join the Ultramarines or Dark Angels."
i think it's a great idea, i don't need or want retarded morons running off on their own as space marines. thats what Orks do = what Free 2 play players do. only have the more dedicated fans play the other races so they take it a bit more serious. and have the rest form large hordes or Orks for us to mow down.
guardsman can't put up a proper fight without a large number of players and vehicles. a number so large that it just wouldn't be possible with people playing other races too.
i like space marines but will start as a boy to learn the game but i really hope the orks will not be weak just because they are free to play, a slugga nob should give a marine a tough fight in close combat.

at least give us free to play guardsmen :(((
and cultists and rangers or so
cultists are useless in small numbers and rangers might make it, you'll make to wait and see.

It does seem like a sensible way of teaching players how to play... but only if the game diverges far from standard MMO fare.
from the articles and video interviews out so far, they claim it very much will be far from the standard MMO fare.
now we wait to see if they can deliver.
i wouldn't mind if it was something like Planetside 40,000, but with proper metagame features
and i think this Da Orks Play Fer Free idea is pretty genius
"HAHAHA! We'z can kick ya arse without spendin' a single cent! Just proves dat we'z da best! Ya jelly, 'umie?"
Also ork logic states that wearing a hat makes you a better player, really.
I'd love to have free-to-play guardsmen, but I'd also like to change the colour of my clothing and armour.
