I quite enjoyed finding this artwork on Shield of Humanity, we all are aware of the aftermath of a battle but we have never seen or read how the dead are treated other than becoming field rations.
I'd guess it would actually be a rarity if the majority of bodies can be recovered, there are far too many weapons that are capable of reducing people to molecular dust in the 41st millenium.
Also battlefields tend to be rather chaotic, even after the battle has ended. And we all know how reliable the imperial bureaucracy is (like responding to distress calls two years later).
Still a nice pic though.

a bit surprised the dead are used as field rations, but sounds very 40k. (what if papa nurgle gave a "blessing" to the poor igs?)
