When I first got into 40k lore, I took it quite straight forward: Imperium good guys and the Chaos gods baddies. But then when I dug deeper, I realized Imperium isn't so great, after which I though Warhammer was Evil vs More evil.
When I read about the Chaos gods, it wasn't hard to see them as the forces of evil, you know, Khorne being the Blood god, Slaanesh literally ******* the Eldar over and Nurgle being the god of plagues, except for Tzeentch. I never really though of him as evil. And that made me ponder the idea of "Good and Evil", because from all the gods of Chaos, why would they make one more sympathetic(At least for me)? Thats when the obvious hit me.
They are the gods of Chaos. Where has it been written that Chaos is evil? They are beings of immense power trying to survive, and humanity and other races are their means by doing it. They manipulate us and use us to insure that they continue to exist, just like we humans have been doing to lesser plants and animals. We need it to survive. Does it make the concept of survival evil? What really is evil? Most of the horrifying things done in 40k were not done by Chaos but by its followers in the name of Chaos in an attempt to please their gods, like a pet trying to impress the owner for a reward.
40k isn't about "Good versus Evil", its "survival ******* deathmatch free for all".
Thats why I love 40k. It has made me look past labels, like "good" and "evil", and search for reasons why are they being labeled as such in the first place.
Sums it up perfectly. The Chaos Gods, while they commit horrible acts of Evil are simply trying to command fear and respect and project thier presence throughout the galaxy. They were born from the collective psyches of billions of humans (with the exception of Slaanesh, who feeds off Eldar Souls), from their fear, hatred, etc. all thanks to the power of the Warp. But without believers, without fear, hatred, and war, they would fade away into nothingness. With all that power they have but one weakness. Faith. The Emperor of Man has the exact same weakness as well. Without trillions of faithful human worshipers his power would easily be trumped by the Chaos Gods and his consciousness would most certainly disappear for good.
Both powers are fighting to protect their right to exist. The same goes for every other race in W40k, especially the Eldar or the Tau, both of whom are the closest thing to "Good" you'll most likely get in W40k. But even they have their faults.
Change ... good, bad, it will invariably come, all we can do is try to survive within the confines of the ever-changing rules.
And remember, there is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt
Expanding on Gurkis12, he's somewhat right. Sure we can see all the bad in them, but they have good in them too. Tzeentch I never really saw as being bad, I always thought of him/her/it as being wise beyond comparison. Khorne/War reminds us what we humans are capable of doing to each other and all living things, and shows us what the true colours of people are. Nurgle/Disease helps to clear the sick and old for the newer, stronger to rise. And Slaanesh/Pleasure... well... who doesn't like fun? The Internet is Chaos incarnate.

Sounds suspiciously like heresy to me.
