Zombie Panic! - Going back to the basics, this was one of the first zombie games, and almost undoubtedly the best. The basis of the game is simple: There's one zombie, he's fast and twice as tough as a human. Everyone else is a human, they're weak and faster. As such the humans much either scavenge the various weapons hidden around the map and annihilate the zombie(s), or should there be too many, complete the various map objectives. The zombies however, have not been able to find one McDonalds in the entire city, and are hungry for some brains... ...There's bound to be some conflict. An essential for every true mod gamer this masterpiece is compatible with HL and just HL (It's worth noting this is the case for every other HL mod listed here). Get the DL here:
Brain Bread - As long as we're talking zombie-mods, we simply cannot deny the grandfather of co-op zombie mods, Brain Bread. Granted, BB had bad zombie AI, it was easy to outmanuver them, and if you wanted you could just stay in one place the entire game and rack-up points. What it did have however was the "spark", the hugely addictive qualities attributed to products like CS, Halo, and crack cocaine. Another must for anyone who likes zombies and co-op you can find the DL here:
The Trenches - Yet another mod simple capture and kill mod, this time centered in WWI. An interesting mod with some strong driving qualities, it's definitely worth a look. Think CS 90-some years ago. Get it here:
Science and Industry - Enter the cutthroat business world of competitive weapons development in Science and Industry. A tactical deathmatch game which is somewhat hard to adequately explain. The basis of the game is that each team has some scientists, they earn money for the team and life is good. But when the big boss man is disappointed and demands profits, the goons are sent out to steal enemy scientists, smash their research equipment, and talk smack about their moms. A very fun mod you can find here...
...And download here:
The Battle Grounds - The companion product to the aforementioned Battlegrounds 2, TBG is accomplishes what the sequel couldn't and falls-flat where the second succeeded. Basically, if you like one, you'll love the other. Get it here:
The Specialists - TS is an action FPS mod where bringing a knife to a gunfight is not only a viable strategy, but actually encouraged. TS seeks to recreate the intense action of Hollywood action movies from Die Hard to The Matrix. In fact, TS borrows so heavily from the best elements of The Matrix that it's a surprise a copyright infringement suit hasn't been filed against the devs. Get it here:
The Ship - And finally not least, quite possibly the best is the quirky "do-it-yourself" murder mod for HL. A very complicated and entertaining game, the basic premise is this: You're on a deluxe ocean cruise. You have to kill one person, and someone else is out to get you. But you must also take care your needs such as: food, entertainment, and the aptly named poo. You don't know who's who on the cruise until you talk to them so you have to be careful and try to appear as one of the bot passengers spread throughout the game as foils to the mechanics. Extremely complicated on paper but simple in practice, The Ship is an exemplar of good, and unique gaming. Get it here:
Hostile-Intent - HI is basically a NATO vs. Terrorist game stylized with combat and gameplay akin to the early Rainbow Sixes (Think Raven Shield and earlier). Realism: Hostile Intent is all about realism, covering realistic weapon damage, realistic missions and mission stories. Hostile Intent aims to bring a level of realism previously unheard of. And with graphics at the same level of detail that a lot of other games/mods/tc's don't have you can't go wrong. Get it here:
Vampire Slayer - With the recent commercializing of vampires one might think that it would be hard, if not impossible, to create a fun Vampire mod. VS however, proves that logic dead wrong. An action deathmatch round based game where the humans hunt the vampires and the vampires eat the humans, gameplay is incredibly tense and nerve-wracking. Between the sudden ambushes, the intense rounds of combat, and the race against the clock, this mod is an adrenaline junkie's wet dream. Get it here:
The Wastes - A post-apoclayptic homage to the old fallout games, The Wastes masterfully provides brilliant wastes shootouts and DM action in an authentic, believeable world. Get it here:
Public Enemy - From the devs of Brainbread is this atmospheric tactical FPS with a thick layer of Neotokyo styling for flavor. And this mod is absolutely loaded with content, with at least 30+ weapons, 8 huge maps, and an immersive cyberpunk soundtrack to back it up. Get it here, if only for the music:
Snow War - Unlike most other mods on this page, Snow War isn't gritty, violent, or set in a dark or post-apocalyptic universe. Instead, SW is a light-hearted and comedic mod centered around--of all things, snowball fights. And SW truly delights with a charm not found since such games as Sam & Max or Secret of Monkey Island.
