A very questionable move, but necessary. Dubcek was proposing 'socialism with a human face', in reality a revisionist look at marxism-leninism (closer to titoism). The USSR at that time was not marxist-leninist anymore, but it couldn't permit one of its allies to separate (there are different tipes of revisionism).
The socialist Czech Republic needed some kind of political reform, not something like a military intervention.

I found something from a famous Communist intellectual here that I think sums it up Youtube.com

what Zizek stands for is not Marxism-Leninism but a new aproach to Marxism. He stands for Syriza and Podemos because there are no material conditions for a proletarian revolution. Indeed, where is the proletariat now? Crushed. There are no more eggs to make a Marxist-leninist Cake. And all that started indeed with 68 (France, Amsterdam, prague Spring), then in Italy with Autonomia (Toni Negri, Franco Bifo Berardi), the 70's with New Left (Marcuse and Frankfurt school), the 80's with Post-Marxism (Neo-gramscism mostly: Ernesto laclau and Chantal Mouffe), 90's with Comandante Marcos Libertarian experience and now we are here, people! We are Fukuiamaists as Zizek says. We want to beleive that the alternatives to capitalism are over. but in other hand, Marxism-Leninism and all its variations (Maoism, orthodox M., etc.) failed. let us swallow that and move beyond. All communist are sons of Babeuf (Rosa luxemburg, Anarco-communism, left libertarians), not only sons of Blaqui (as Lenin, Stalin,Trotsky)! It is time to reinvent the Left, like we did in lost times. If we fail that, guess what? NEOFASCISM is on the way here!

here is a good exemple of what I'm trying to reproduce (in my above coment).
Moddb.com

Imagine all that (pure socialism, and that stands for true democracy) with freedom of speech and travell. That is my definition of Socialism with Human face. Some call it Social-Democatic, others Trotskysm. The truth is this: If in some point, URSS or Maoist China were able to implement this they still be here. So my strike isn't against Gorbachev (dispite being an oportunist *******) but against conservatism on the Left that created Frankenstein Gorbachev. It's true that the URSS was the very first time in history where the ideals of Gracchi brothers, the French revolution, the idea that the people should have power (aka democracy for the ancient greeks, before "ellections" took place--> democracy stands for redestribution of land!), the radical idea of equality (shared with Christianity, as Zizek says--> go and interpret the forbidden gospel of Thomas: I cant find it now, but the message is like, "we are here to agitate things to the ground", Gnosis.org there is an spoken version also Youtube.com). but it (URSS model) failed! let us transform the Left into something revolutionary once more!

One last thing (sorry man, I really want to see the original revolutionary positions of Communists in action in my life time!), the so called XXI century Communist Manifesto:
Angelfire.com

There are no Proleterians, the revolutionary subjet today is MULTITUDE (from a Spinoza reading). And we are all part of it with tremendous divergencies looking for the same goal (even if we dont know it yet): true freedom, equality, human rights defense, LOVE. And the only way to do it is, like Marx says (almost like this) "bring capitalism to the ground so IT CAN discover/invent Socialism".

There is a Portuguese Maoist that always says: I want to visit the Apartheid Museum, but what I really love is to enter the CAPITALIST MUSEUM! Down with the system!
