This thread is for any talk concerning fanfiction, so it has a better place than random comments on images and the summary page.

I know not everyone here reads fanfiction, so please don't feel as though I wish to impose it on you.

As a side note to anyone looking to try MLP fanfiction for the first time, I recommend looking to Equestria Daily first, as they have the highest quality control standards for fanfics of any site I've seen.

(They have pre-readers that accept or reject fanfics from showing up.)

To start things off- What works of fanfiction have you enjoyed? Been disappointed in? Found to be surprisingly good?

Personally, my favorite MLP fanfic is the rather deviant Fallout: Equestria.

It takes place in a possible future of the show where an equivalent to a nuclear apocalypse has taken place, and does a surprisingly great job of showing how it got that way in a believable way without breaking the cannon.* Though it is a universe of its own, it is highly styled after the Fallout game series by Bethesda, and fans of the series are likely to enjoy it.

*(Or at very least without breaking the cannon at the time it was written; and in my opinion the MLP cannon since it was written has yet to contradict it.)

It follows the adventures of a heroic mare named Littlepip from an large, intricate underground survival bunker called a Stable* across a violent post-apocalyptic Equestria.

*(Equivalent to the Vaults of the Fallout series.)

While the adventures of Littlepip take place over a hundred years after the show, it depicts scenes from the past with the mane 6 to show what led to Littlepip's time.

The fanfic actually spawned its own Fallout Equestria sub-fandom with its well-developed universe building, and there is a plethora of fanfics of the original FO:E fanfic as well as loads of fanart.

Though I will warn that FO:E is just as dark as the Fallout universe and that there are things I disagree with in it, it does an amazing job of creating empathy with the characters- I felt happy when they were happy, sad when they were sad, angry when they were angry and so on- and I don't think I've seen that done better in any story I've read, fanfic or otherwise.

Of course, I've also read much more peaceful and ordinary fanfics that I also enjoyed such as My Sweetie (Derpy adopts an orphan named Sparkler), but I figured I'd put my favorite in the first post.

EDIT:

This thread didn't take off and probably won't, but for those who want something more feel-good and far less violent and don't mind a well done crossover, you might try Order from Chaos and its sequel Justice.

Don't let this scare you off, but its a crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and MLP:FiM, but it barely even mentions Sonic himself.

The first is written as a journal while the second follows characters more personally, and both exemplify good writing and characterization.

The only characters from the show depicted are Celestia and Luna, but they have important roles to play in the second story and I have never seen them characterized better in a fic.

In theory a third story will be written, but the author has taken a long haitus.
