Russia (I believe this weird yellow Countryball relates to the old Russia ruled by Tsars) sold the Alaska to USA somewhere around 1865, they've thought that they're selling just a frozen rock with some trees around... Shortly after the Americans discovered there gold, oil, gas etc.
