They actually did that to confuse the allies. Allies figured out a pattern the Germans used for their tanks, like naming them Panther, Tiger etc. Each one was bigger and more powerful then before, just like the animals themselves(Tiger is more powerful then a Panther), so Germans got a bit sneaky and called one of their most powerful tanks Maus, meaning Mouse...look it up :P

I mean would you really think i was making something truly terrifying if i called it Mouse?

An interesting fact, the Maus was initially planned to be called mammoth but it was later changed.
