I am not trying to defend the action of those nutjobs, I just find it irritating that these guys get labeled for doing something that we are doing for a long time. Muslims around the world are carrying out acts of actual Jihad against these a-holes for more than a few decades. Hell, we are engaged in almost half a dozen different fronts around the globe to contain and terminate these violent elements at any given time. We lost way more people to them than the West combined. And we also take the blunt of their cowardly attacks. These kinds of misuse of words blatantly ignore that sacrifice of the Muslims that fought against these lunatics and label something that is noble to something else differently. We all know these guys under a single name: Terrorists, why change that?

In any case, yes, it is true that Muslims have been dealing with these elements for a long time. But the simple fact is there are leaders who justify these courses of action. They use their dogma to back it, that's the truth. I can't deny that, neither can you. A significant segment either believes it justified or outright supports it. You could blame a variety of factors but it doesn't change the reality.
To really understand it however, you'd have to delve back to before the Crusader era. These warlike tendencies didn't just appear out of nowhere. But that requires telling the truth. A truth few will admit, and fewer will enjoy discussing.

In the end, you believe that Jihad is just a word since no one all agrees on it. Well that's the catch, enough agree on it to the point they're using it to kill thousands every year.
