I may never understand how descendants of the Roman Empire could've fallen so low in the warriors breed. Rome was a melting pot by the time of it's fall, but still...
Last I remember they had to be Roman citizens under a certain age to be Legionary material. Given it was mandatory to serve nearly 3 decades for a Legionary, I guess being a soldier back then was more of a lifelong profession.
I sometimes wonder how anxious people would be to join a military today knowing they had to serve a minimum of 25 years before discharge... It didn't help the Emperor constantly changed the terms of service dragging it out further, this caused rebellion in the Legionary ranks near the end of the Empire's prime.
Italy lost so hard, they managed to lose more aircraft than what they originally had in the conflict.

not only that to be a Legionary you needed to own a piece of land. NO LAND NO JOB.
