The whole idea is that USA wants Assad gone for good so that they may deal with Syria the way they want and use ISIS as pretext. However Russia has exactly the opposite agenda, they like Assad and for that reason they're going to fight ISIS. It's quite simple if you think about it.
This dictator won democratic elections with over 80%. How many countries of the region have real elections? Take Saudi Arabia, it's unobstructed monarchy.
Assad means quite a lot for Putin. Sending actual army is a strong act for Russia.
If that's the case then he's late. Also, Assad doesn't mean that much to Putin. His main interest is securing Russian assets in the area, shoring up Assad's authority by bombing his political enemies, and, this is a theory, to divert attention away from Ukraine.
@ murauder - It's not like that. Russia has a lot of western backfire on it already because of Krim and the situation in Ukraine. Rushing with the army in Syria may start WW3. That's why they take only baby steps in this direction.
If it wasn't for Assad, Moscow would probably just talk against ISIS. But Assad and Putin have oil-weapons deal. Russians can't let Syria fall to USA influence, because then they would have hard times selling Russian oil in Europe.
The question is what do you understand by "real elections"? Besides, being elected is not the difference between a dictator and one that isn't. Syria is an example among the many.
I dont know why the media put things upside down.
Assad is not a good guy nor bad he is ok syria was making lot of money but you know same thing happened to libya and things were better in libya then syria free homes free electricity up to a certian amount.

Thats actually true, I have to side with Putin here. No hate, its just how I see it!

I read the first box as: "Our primary objective in Syria is to defend ISIS"
My brain is a good spell checker. :)
> Assuming Putin's interest is defeating DAESH and not defending Syrian dictator
