Because like Lord of the Rings, ASoIaF also has a long history behind it. There are those somewhere in this world that actually learn Dothraki. ASoIaF, LotR, and SW all have something in common. A long history. So those who actually end up memorizing most of the history (I only know of LotR and a little bit of SW, still starting ASoIaF) should be considered a nerd. Therefore, ASoIaF can relate to being a nerd.
Hunger Games can go just as deep into nerd territory once you start doing a geopolitical analysis of the factions and their global aims...
instead of immersing yourself into the history of the book, HG is one of the few texts which can lead to nerdhood via the other (real world) direction, by "counting backwards" to figure out how the get from the present day into HG-style world. The scary thing is, that doesn't take many steps...
How does watching the Hunger games relate to A song of Ice and Fire or being a nerd? If he said LotR or Star Wars I would be less critical...
The term now also covers a broader spectrum.

Hunger games is meh.
I agree with A Song of Ice and Fire making one a nerd but not the Hunger Games which is why I didn't understand why the two were compared.
