That's true...
It seems to me like this platform is shaping up to be very Indie-centric. All of these elements are things I can see an independent developer finding a God-Send.
Don't know where you're going to want to go with that. You could run with it, embrace the indie side, and create what seems to be shaping up to be an extremely accessible platform for as-of-yet under the radar developers, or you can move towards a general interest market like Steam (though I think you're going to be much more Indie-friendly than Steam regardless of what you do). In the latter case I think you're going to need a huge breakthrough, like a partnership with a major company or a huge bestselling game.
In any case, if this thing catches on I can quite seriously see it leveling the playing field between professional developers and big-name brands, and independent developers and obscure titles.
If Desura made a deal with a for-profit game, then it would just be copying Steam.
By supporting Indie Game developers, Desura is being different; Standing out of the (Steam) crowd.
My point: THERE IS NO SECOND OPTION.
