I'am sure they would have explained how he got off. They do have stories in real life about injured commandos trapped behind enemy lines.

If he survived he would be stuck on a prison planet, and as a spec ops trooper he would be a perfect prisoner but as a commando (sort of ) would have had training to either escape enemy lines or survive until the republic could have launched another assault (or won the war) on the planet.

Following the release of the sixth and final season of The Clone Wars, Supervising Director Dave Filoni mentioned that Echo survived the events of "Counterattack." According to Series Writer Brent Friedman, the character was to be featured in an arc that he wrote focusing on a team of experimental clone commandos, which would have premiered the series' seventh season had it been produced.
