Alright, I believe there was a post about Terraria on here before but I can't find it, it's probably buried on the last page somewhere, and I was probably the last poster so nobody would read what I'm posting anyways.

Sometime in the next couple months (money allowing) I will quite possibly be hosting a Terraria server. I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in that, it will be Bundeals group (and our steam group, Indie Bundle Tracker) only and maybe a few of my personal friends (if you want friends to join in, they have to join one of the groups!).

The general rule for the server is don't wreck other people's shit without their premission. I'm not big on people that come in and grab all the treasure for themselves, so please refrain from grabbing EVERYTHING, grab some stuff yeah, but leave some for the rest of us too :) if you want to grab everything you can do that in your own games lol.

All I need to know is if Hamachi is still required to play the game, if so we will probably have to set up their cheapest subscription which supports up to 32 people, it's not too badly priced it's normally 29.00 per year, 19.00 right now on sale. If we go that route I would muchly appreciate people to help me pay for it, but I won't force anyone (and hey, we'd have a Bundeals Hamachi network for some games that only support LAN)

Of course this is also open to our Steam group Indie Bundle Tracker, I just don't use it much because I hate trying to navigate to Steam groups, it's so much easier on Desura.

The reason it will take me a couple months (possibly even the middle of this month if we're lucky) is because I'm upgrading an older (but still pretty good) computer to be a dedicated server with scheduled downtime every week for cooldown. Doesn't take much to run a Terraria server so as long as I get a good network card I'll be set.

If we get more than 32 people interested I will ask you to be nice, log out of the Bundeals Hamachi network when you're not playing on it, it saves us from stepping up from 29.00/year to 119.00/year. The 119.00 is very unecessary unless people really want to use our network, it supports up to 256 people, but there is a cost of 119 per year. Meaning we'd probably have to charge subscription, so just be courteous and log out of the network when you're not using it.

Did you try Tunngle.net. You don't need money and Hamachi neither.

I hadn't heard of Tungle until now. The free version supports up to 32 people, so that would be more than viable.

I played a lot already but me and my friend are always ready to take part to a terraria party. On tunngle, if you set a free basic network for terraria, I saw that it's deleted after 3 days of inactivity. But it can always be recreated.

By the way, it don't think you need to set a Lan. Just create a server type game on a computer, give us the IP number + the password + open ports. I think thats it!

Been there, done that! :rambo:

I started a terraria server(had to open some port in the router, don't remember with...), give the ip (or DNS name) to some friends, and we started playing.

At that time we were playing a cooff.. cooff..."free" version (if you know what i mean).

It's very cool playing in multiplayer, the only down size for me of course, is that the map would get "clean" in a very short time from the most "active" players.

But sure i will play again.

I could even start a new server, but I’m afraid my bandwidth would not be enough (already have minecraft server, FTP, web Server, IP cameras, you’re getting the picture) :S

I got it - unsure if I'll like it or not, but at that price it was worth a shot. :)

We have to figure out a good way to keep the modem/router combo unit cool, with the heat it's been cutting out and overheating on us every week :( and thats with actually letting it cool down, not just unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in like some people do.

@ifss i think you'll like Terraria. its a fun little game. i didn't play that long cause i got bored playing by myself so if Melcator gets this server going i think it could be fun.

The unit we have is a modem/router combo, it has heat vents all along the top and bottom, I took a look at it it doesn't even have a bloody heatsink? Is this normal or what? We're thinking of buying a small fan and having it blow across the thing...

Or if you already have desk fans around, take off the cover and put it near one of them. I've used desk fans before for cooling on the very rare hot summer days we have when it isn't bloody raining.
