Thats easy just imagine from what direction you want the light source to be from & use some real life & or manga pics as refference. Be sure to use a Q tip as it helps blend the different shades togeather. you can practive shading with simple shapes like spheres, cubes, & cylinders.
Also when moving to lighter tone while shading with a regular pencil (I prefer mechanical) use less presure & dont press so hard since this will make blending the different shades togeather easier.
