Railgun's events starts a little before A Certain Magical Index. However Index's seasons aired first.
So the proper timeline for the anime is:
Railgun Season 1
Index Season 1 and Railgun Season 2 take place at Roughly the same time until Episode 15 for Index and Railgun season 2 Episode 17.
Then Season 2 of Index. The Railgun manga only covers up to the Sports Festival.

The series have a very intricate storyline so you might get confused if you're not paying close attention.

this sole pic don't do justice for the entire franchise. :|
there are many manga/anime/lightnovel that each focuses on different main characters. sometimes they cross each other storyline and all of these created such epic universe.

Description

AKA "A certain scientific Railgun". Misaka Mikoto (left) is the eponymous Railgun, for her signature move where she fires coins with her electricity powers. To the right is Kuroko Shirai, a teleporter and somewhat in love with Misaka (who does all she can to keep Kuroko's advances away, usually with shock therapy).
