Compression really destroyed both images.
Also the Wonder Momo webcomic looks better than the anime.

Because gif isn't good at detailed color depth? High quality jpg (NOT the typical 80% crappy default-no-you-cannot-change-it setting many programs have) would work perfectly fine with this pic.
