I only started watching this anime now. This is a comedy anime, with hints that otakus normally get, and I'm currently liking it! Lucky Star's story mainly portrays the lives of four Japanese girls attending a Japanese high school. he main character is Konata Izumi, an athletic and somewhat intelligent (even though she likes to copy), but also slightly mischievous and laid-back girl who, despite these attributes, is not in a sports club and has to resort to all-nighter cramming for tests. She would rather read manga and play video games than do her homework.

Yes, just now! And now I regret it, it is amazing. The jokes are not only intelligent, but actually funny. As simple as it sounds, there are a lot of 'comedy' anime series that can't deliver a single funny line.

you said the jokes are intelligent? more like:
in-jokes, in-jokes everywhere...
In this case, we can consider the jokes being in-jokes and also intelligent. Only the fans from other (mostly classic) anime will recognize the in-joke. Lucky Star is a comedy from everyday situation.
but TOO MUCH in-jokes is NOT GOOD!
Seriously, it's like "if you don't understand, lurk more!". it's like you must be a basement dweller weeaboo to get all the references. why watching other anime just for knowing a slight in-joke in this anime. it's annoying! if it's just webcomic or fandom it's okay, but they works differently with TV serial.
you know, the only reason this anime get popular: VIRAL.
