A failed attack upon a downed enemy mothership wipes out all of tank squad UTS-187. That is all but one! Cut off from your allies you must battle your way through waves of enemy forces to reach the final confrontation... Will you succeed?
Our current project is to make several short, playable concept demos (mini-games if you like) of around 3-5 levels in length. These demo's will then be put out for people to play and offer feedback. The ones that gain the most interest will be added to a short list of projects that we're looking to turn into much bigger releases.
The first of these mini-games, UTS-178, has just reached completion. In the game you play the part of a tank that is the sole survivor of a failed attack upon a downed enemy mother ship ins some far distant intergalactic war. Cut off from your allies, you have to battle your way through waves of enemy units in an attempt to return to friendly forces.
The premise of the game is simple enough. But to keep things interesting, and try and move the game away from being a standard SHMUP, we've added in the need to collect fuel, ammo and armour to keep your tank alive. We wanted also to put as much emphasis on avoiding enemies and obstacles as shooting them.
The game has gone though a number of revisions since the first version, as can be seen in the following video:
In this version the game was much more difficult than it is now, and this led to a lot of unfair deaths and frustration for the player. It was decided that the best way to fix this was by adding in the armour mechanic where the player can survive a certain amounts of hits from bullets and mines, and later refined by adding a shield to the players tank when they make contact with walls and obstacles.
Another change that was made to the latest version was the removal of the particle heavy explosions. While we thought they looked nice enough, they did cause some slow down issues with older machines and the flash version. The effect was replaced by a much simpler sprite based explosion, and the game now runs a lot quicker.
The game currently contains four levels. Levels 1, 2 and 4 are shooters, with each being slightly more difficult than the first, and level 3 is an avoidance level where you must make your way through a minefield.
