Rarely seen and never caught, Garrett is a master thief — the best who ever was. Able to sneak past any guard, pick any lock, and break into the most ingeniously secured residences, he steals from the rich and gives to himself, making a living in the dark and foreboding City. Here crime and corruption are commonplace, wealthy nobles prey on the poor and each other, and magic and machinery coexist uneasily. World-weary and cynical, Garrett wants nothing more than to be left alone to ply his trade. But things never work out that way.
Thief 3 is a truly wonderful game. You play as Garret - a master thief who is employed by the keepers (the people who trained him before he went on his own way) to save the city. As Garret, you go about breaking into many places from Cathedrals, Nobleman's houses to haunted houses and Pagan places of worship. There are many ways you can go about to finish your mission, will you go about killing people and using your best equipment to get through a mission? Or will you be a true master thief manoeuvring in the shadows to gain the objects you seek? Every NPC has almost perfect AI, reacting to noises and other NPCs. You can even join a faction and complete quests for them. These factions include The Builders - a religious sect who worship a deity called The Builder and who are responsible for all the advancements in the world (hence their name) and the Pagans - another religious sect who serve a deity called "The Trickster" and who seek to turn everything back to nature. If ever members of these factions meet, they attack each other. If a Builder meets an undead, he will remark upon its foul existence before attacking. The scripting in Thief 3 is done very well and the haunted places you explore are truly atmospheric.
Some call this the greatest game of all time and I wish I could do a truly deserving review for this great game.
All I can say is:
Buy it, even if you don't like stealth games, Thief 3 is really unique and if the gameplay doesn't entice you, the story and levels will.
