Turning WOW64 on is required (here is how you do this youtu.be/PjbV-PQycT8 on Win10 while Win7 should have it turned on as default) as with most old 32-bit games.
Dxwnd is highly recommended (but not required) for improved stability (not just for The Divide but for a lot of old games) and ability to run the game windowed (which also helps to avoid alt+tab crashes). PLEASE READ FULL DESCRIPTION -->
Release trailer: Youtube.com
v1.0 features:
Support for high resolutions
Infinite draw distance
Massive field of view
Fluid camera movement
Works on modern systems (Windows 7-10 and possibly 11, works fine under Wine in Linux)
New interface bar
Cheats unlocked (those are available in pause menu as the last 3 options)
16:9 Widescreen (beta)
v1.1 features:
Full 16:9 Widescreen support (4:3 aspect ratio is playable via another exe inside Extras25 folder) and it is now the default view for the main EXE, although font quality is worse compared to 4:3. If you really want to play 21:9 or others then you can adapt the screen view by changing these int16 variables via Cheat Engine: 0x40FEAF and 0x40FEA3.
Improved sound balance and added some global reverb effect (you can remove it in alsoft.ini) to make sound output feel less sterile compared to PSX version.
Now you can limit vertical draw distance by pressing F4 to see behind obstacles which is a very nice alternative to camera controls which are currently not working in this patch.
List of ultimate goals:
Fix crashes caused by DirectSound compatibility issues; Widescreen with transparent interface bar; Improve fonts for widescreen EXE; Automatic field of view for different aspect ratios; Working camera control; Replicate some features of this patch with PSX version; Improve sound balance by reducing loud sounds volume; Improve video quality (possibly by ripping better quality videos from PSX version); Hard mode maybe? Most of these goals I may not reach because they might require a lot more time figuring disassembled code without sources and I want to pursuit my other projects.
Original Camera executable (inside Extras25 folder) includes working camera control (which is useless 96% of the time and I'm very sorry for trouble in those 4% of rooms but since v1.1 you can press F4 to see behind obstructed view) but it also includes the shaky camera movement which might be nauseating. Unfortunately, I still haven't found a way to fix shakiness and keep camera control.
This EXE might be a better option if you're playing while sitting away from your TV, because the camera shakiness is not that noticeable that way and you can also control camera distance to the character.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
- MAKE SURE you are running the game on C drive and if not then change it to your drive instead of "C:." in RUN_THIS_FIRST.REG file. Otherwise you'll probably not be able to save the game.
- Sometimes the camera might not remove shakiness when entering rooms due to heavy CPU usage by background processes and to fix this just press UP ARROW on your keyboard.
- Main menu can be very unstable and may crash for random reasons but once you are in-game running and shooting then the game should be very stable. If somehow the game keeps crashing after intro videos then try to set Compatibility mode in EXE properties to XP SP3 and reset PC, but according to players who had this bug it just fixes itself after some time, but crashes may still happen in-game. I believe those crashes are related to some DirectSound compatibility problems and I'm working on fixing it. EDIT: try closing all applications that uses sound like browser, etc. If nothing works, try turning music or/and sound off.
- If your game crashes on picking up MAP1 item early in the game (first item you get after fixing legs) then just start a new game, press Escape -> Pause Menu -> Capacity -> turn MAP1 ON then go two options back and Switch Levels -> Planet Surface -> 3. That crash is related to forced map screen opening so if it happened to you then teleports must be avoided too but thankfully the game is linear enough that teleportation is mostly unnecessary (plus you have cheats to change levels).
- This patch was tested by just a few people before release so If you experience other problems then tell me on this site or under trailer video. If you experienced no problems while playing please tell me too =)
An interview with the lead designer of The Divide: Hardcoregaming101.net Big shout-out to John Szczepaniak who did this interview back in 2009 and who helped me test this patch.
P.S. Full game is included.
