I've been playing this game for a day or so with some friends and I've noticed that every time we've played we usually take on what seems to be three primary roles on our respective vessels. The Captain, Gunner, and Grunt.

Captain: Your primary role is to keep the ship in the most advantageous position for firing and minimizing damage.
As the captain your team relies on you to both keep them alive and allow them to destroy the enemy. If you steer your ship improperly your Gunners will not be-able to properly fire the cannons, and as you will probably be taking cannon volleys your Grunts will have to rush to help get everyone on their feet and the ship back in proper sailing condition. You should be-able to circle around enemy ships while keeping them in range of your cannons, and at all costs avoid being boarded.

Gunner: Your primary role is to keep your cannons both loaded and firing.
As the gunner your responsible for firing the cannons on the enemy. You should be able to "lead" your shots, meaning understanding how your vessel is moving as well as how the enemy vessel is moving and firing your cannons accordingly. Your also responsible for keeping your cannon working by repairing it when your are not able to fire,

Grunt: As a grunt your primary role is to repair ship damage, and heal the rest of your crew. You're MAINLY responsible for keeping the engines and helm in a working condition. While this is your primary job, you should also keep watch on whatever needs to be repaired on your vessel. If cannons are damaged and your gunners are busy firing, take some time to repair the cannons for them. If your Captain is busy avoiding cannon fire take some time to repair the helm. If your team has been taking volley after volley of cannons take some time to heal them. Basically your job is to do what ever is needed to keep your team and ship functioning.

What do you think about these? What roles do you usually take on when playing?

I'm normally forced to play captain because Mr.Bojangles7 is a n00b and couldn't pilot the ship for the life of him. But i prefer to take on the role of a gunner or a grunt. It seems here however that the two roles are somewhat blended together. When the enemies are not in range, the entire crew should heal each other and repair the ship, and once the enemy gets within range, the entire crew would split up into all the roles you have specified.

I personally love being the Captain of the ship, hopefully we'll see some sort of quick-chat menu you can use to shout out commands to your crew, because unless you're all on a voice client together, typing isn't nearly quick enough!

I agree with the idea of Grunts, but I also believe they should be geared towards boarding enemy ships, that way you can keep a crew on board in case you need to fire another volley or your boarding run doesn't work out properly!

A quick-chat really would be nice. I'm going to make that a higher priority.

Just as a side note, I noticed that I forgot to include the "expand map" button in the in-game control list. If you're not the captain, you can still access the overhead view by holding "c" to get a better view of the overall action.

Haha, shouting over VoIP saying "Prepare the port side!, fire the port side!", and hoping to god the rest of the public players on your ship follows the lead of the guys we have on VoIP. Too many misfires.
