Neocarnage (aka the SoulQuest project) is an MMO that we're currently developing. It isn't aiming to be the next WoW or anything, just to be a fun game. Soulquest won't actually be the final name. It will most likely be based off the excelent Tourque Game Engine. Unfortunately, most of the info for this game was lost during the transition between ModDB V3 to V4.

Hello everyone on ModDB! I've just come up with a brilliant new plan to get SoulQuest done a lot faster!

It has come to my attention that my team and I lack the resources and skill needed to complete the game. So, we're opting for more of a "community" influence in the project. For example: someone who doesn't want the responsibilities of a full-time team member can contribute a few weapon models (once I start uploading my vast collection of concept art for modeling reference), or contribute a few sound effects. Any little thing you think is useful. There will still be full-time team members, but contributors will be the driving force of the project.

Interesting but you must give credit.

So, just how do you actualy intend to build an MMOG? MMOGs cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars to build and run; the amount of media required is incredible, and the code is beyond the capacity of all but the most voracious development teams.

I think you really need to get out and learn what it takes to build even a small multiplayer game before even thinking about MMO development.

Considering that this probably won't even get a thousand players for a while, I wouldn't worry too much. Models are low poly and textures are low resolution to cause minimal server problems. I dont think there will be to many financial problems either. Remember, this isn't World of Warcraft.

Models and textures don't really cause server problems at all. All that is stored on the client. Data transfer is the issue that causes latency and costs bandwidth; it's all about keeping everything in sync with everyone and everyone else.

Either way, you'd still need multiple servers to keep your persistent world running regardless of the number of players; all that data has to be stored and served by something even if no-one is using it at a given time.

Your major concern is still also content generation; there's just so much that needs to be done in terms of code and media. Take any popular Half-Life 2 mod (like Dystopia). Those mods took 20-30 man teams several years to complete, and they only essentially included some game play augmentations and a small handful of new weapons and a bit of content to an existing game. I don't mean to be harsh, but building an MMO just isn't feasible unless you're the cream of the crop, like the Infinity development team.

If it could be done so easily and flippantly, there would be a lot more amateur developed MMOGs out there already; but there are in fact next to none.

Your concerns and points are 100% accurate. Remember contributions? Sure, contributors won't be as dedicated or as talented as a team, but there will hopefully. be a lot more of them than most teams have. It should be easier once I start uploading the concept art within 2 days. Hopefully, I won't have to be doing too much (since there isn't much I can do). I never denied the ambition of this project, but intend to see it through.

Even infinity relies on contributions. And contributors only contribute to already outstanding projects. They don't like to see their work and effort go wasted.

My last point still stands; if it was so piss easy, there would be amateur developed MMOGs, and they would have been there a long time ago.

I never said I wouldn't need contrubutions (I never said I did, but whatever) .I don't know if you know, but there will be ingame memberships to do some of the cooler stuff in the game. Obviously I can't charge $15 for them like most major MMOGS do, but memberships will be there. If and when I do ever complete this Ill be sure to thank you for all the "support". You've stated your opinion, I get it, and I know you might be trying to help, but I get it. So you and everybody else can stop voicing your doubts. All that needs to be said has been said to death.
