Legends of an Ancient City: Into the Depths is a rogue like game set in the Roman Age with a fantasy setting. It has many features that will make it fun and challenging, such as a set of different bosses for each level, different stances you must use against certain creatures, a range of different stats, and different locations that effect both you and your opponents. Best yet, though, it is open source. If you want to code it, then let me know.

Carapace Labyrinths

LOAAC concept1 modifs 2

The carapace labyrinth is home to many terrors. Instead of the conventional beast or being, this land holds insects of great size. They come in massive swarms, clawing and chewing away at the flesh of all who enter their hive. The walls are littered with insect exoskeletons, just another stepping stone in the path for the swarm.

History

Once a great kingdom of man, this catacomb soon became plagued and all the people died. Soon after, the insects that fed off the mass amount of dead bodies grew and grew into abominable arthropods. The revel in the taste of man flesh, and their descendants keep their appetite, and most of their size. Now no man dares step into the crawling dungeon.

Locations

The carapace labyrinth is the most commonly appearing level, due to its simplicity.

Mexicana

A temperate land with many forests and plains, very good for settling.

Peruvia

A lush forest full of many foes. A challenge indeed.

Gallica

A rich and forested land, with temperate climate that breeds good crops and tasty but dangerous animals.

Scythos

An expansive desert full of dangerous landscape and scavenging animals.

Orient

A cold desert to the north and lush jungles to the south, Orient is a strange and unexplored land to Rome.

Indus

A coastal jungle full of different beasts. Houses many deep and unusual caverns.

Afrika

An all but undiscovered land spanned by savannas and rainforests.

Specified LootResources

The mined or harvested resources of the maps.

Chitin

A cluster of empty exoskeletons. Can be crafted into a full carapace to provide armor.

Found In

  • Exuviae

Looted

The items automatically obtained by a carcass or container.

Venom Gland

A sac found in the abdomen of a spider, which allows for poison attacks, allowing you to hit them easier.

Found In

  • Spider

Acetic Flamethrower

This bio-weapon can be salvaged from the body of a fire beetle. It allows the spray of boiling liquid, something likened to greek fire. It has a wide range of attack, allowing it to hit many foes at once.

Found In

  • Fire Beetle

Carapace

A chitinous shell that can be used as armor. Can be looted from dead arthropods.

Found In

  • Fire Beetle
  • Weta
  • Spider
  • Giant Ant

EnemiesSwarms

The main enemies. One level can obtain all of them.

Slime

Said to be the mad experiment of a goblin kobold, slimes are almost impossible to kill but are very slow and quite harmless. In short, they are not a threat on their own, but when they are allowed to creep close in a large battle, then they may be something to worry about.

Weta

A fast but weak insect with razor-sharp front legs used to impale prey. They come in large swarms, as they are little more than a pest on their own. With any sharp sword they can be felled with one hit.

Centipede

Centipedes are one of the greater threats in this labyrinth. They are large targets, which would have made them vulnerable if they did not have hard shells. Once they rear up to strike they can be cut to pieces, but before that their shell is all but impenetrable. Once they strike, neurotoxins are injected into the body, causing paralysis.

Spider

The great spiders of old weave webs of silver that are harder than steel. However, their webs are not dangerous alone. The spiders are great threats when encountered, with massive mandibles that inject poison into the body to rot the innards and make them drinkable. Spiders are slower to attack, but they are tough and their bite is deadly.

Fire Beetle

A great insect with a bulbous abdomen full of boiling acid. It sprays forth this naphtha to dissuade attackers, but when attacked may take significant damage for it's fragile shell. Somewhat reminiscent to a bombardier beetle, but much, much, smaller.

Giant Ant

A quick and venomous kind of insect that comes in great swarms, usually serving a queen. Their venom causes paralysis, and in that time they will eat you alive.

Bosses

There is only one boss for each level, but it will be randomized between the three.

Great Weaver

Great weavers are massive spider bred in the pits of Svartalfaheim, the dark world. They are everything a spider is except more dangerous.

Forsaken

The Forgotten Lands is not a perfect world. There are mistakes. The forsaken are one of these mistakes, a reptilian mess of claws and heads and extra limbs. They are the unworthy spawn of the saurian queen Coatlicue, and thus are shunned by their kin. Now they have moved to Midgard, to seek a new life among the hive.

Horror-Of-A-Thousand-Legs

The dark breeds death itself. In this case, death comes in the form of a monstrous centipede that sprays forth paralyzing venom. They are most vulnerable when they draw back to strike, and when they strike one must take cover. They can leap meters, and if it does not kill you, you may be poisoned instead.

Abyssal Sanctuary

cathedral concept1

cathedral concept2

The abyssal sanctuary is a gothic underground cathedral where dark elves have settled. As most dark elves live above ground, it can only be assumed these are outlaws among their folk.

History

Dwarves once settled here, as can be seen from the runic marks and advanced architecture. Then, apparently, the dwarves either left or the dark elves moved in. They corrupted the place, but in some ways fit it to their own unique and somewhat appealing if not intimidating style. They apparently rebelled from their lord and settled the land, being lost in time. They have lived off the edible fungi that cling to the walls and floor.

Locations

The dark sanctuary can be found throughout the north, but is all but unseen in the south.

Nordenland

A cold waste of volcanic plains and icy tundras.

Vinland

Vinland is a land namely settled by the natives. It is a cold but for the most part habitable region, with forests covering the snowy land.

Germania

A cold climate with inhospitable woods and icy waters.

Rusland

A never-ending taiga full of wild animals and cruel folk.

Specified LootResources

The mined or harvested resources of the maps.

Black Diamond

A shining gem that can be imbued with dark magic for better spellcasting.

Found In

  • Black Diamond Cluster

Looted

The items automatically obtained by a carcass or container.

Black Iron Sabre

A curved blade forged with black iron from Svartalfaheim. Must have belonged to a being of high importance due to its rarity.

Found In

  • Dark Elf Soldier

EnemiesSwarms

The main enemies. One level can contain all of them.

Dark Elf Soldier

The dark elves are known for their legions, but one dark elf alone is no threat. Most soldiers are drafted townsfolk with little training.

Black Dwarf Champion

A dwarf that has stared into the eyes of the dark hunters, and has given up all honor for war. Champions are shield and block breakers, but they are slow and take a while to recover after their attacks. Their armor is state of the art, and spines come form everywhere they can fit, making them a living mace.

Swart Mage

A dark elf that has undergone the route of magic to kill foes. They can raise dead, shoot crippling spells, and heal their allies. They themselves are weak, but they can cast magical boundaries to defend themselves for a short time.

Dark Elf Revenant

A soldier that has fallen and been raised again by either a swart mage or arch necromancer. They will keep on fighting through thick and thin, with slow but steady attacks. Otherwise they are exactly the same as the ordinary soldier.

Dire Wolf

A riderless wolf that has been corrupted by dark hunters. Originally from the Forgotten Lands, these formidable predatory giants attack fast and stealthily, nearly impossible to notice in the dark with their black coat. They can be blocked with a shield easily, but when they break through can tear one apart in seconds.

Bosses

There is only one boss for each level, but it will be randomized between the three.

Great Weaver

Great weavers are massive spider bred in the pits of Svartalfaheim, the dark world. They are everything a spider is except more dangerous.

Lyndwyrm

A two-legged wingless dragon that has a long, snakelike body and formidable poison. Their bite is instant injection with acid, and their vapor gives painful burns. Their belly is weak, but their blood too is poisonous, so it is a good idea to keep at a distance or be ready to move out of the way.

Arch Necromancer

A dark elf sorcerer that has mastered his skills to bring back legions of the dead at a time. Nobody can tell whether he is dead himself or not, but if he is undead, he would have mastered the art of preservation. He must be defeated or his ghouls will continue to rise, and when he is attacking will use black magic to bring you down. He wields nothing more than a black scepter, but he can imbue it with attack magic to turn it as dangerous as a steel forged sword.

Subterranean Temple

pyramid concept

This vast network of tunnels all converges into a great chamber with a stone pyramid in the center. It would appear to be made by the Aztecs, but no man could have made such an elite monument. The steep stairway up the temple proves difficult, with both enemies and natural hazards.

History

The saurians have obviously made this either quickly or have moved in from the last time they stayed at Midgard. Either way, it is likely this was once a massive cave that became sacred land to the saurians. They built their great temple there in honor of their bloodthirsty gods.

Locations

With only two locations, the Subterranean Temple is one of the rarest but most difficult levels.

Mexicana

A temperate land with many forests and plains, very good for settling.

Peruvia

A lush forest full of many foes. A challenge indeed.

Specified LootResources

The mined or harvested resources of the maps.

Obsidian Shard

A piece of black glass that is great for magical sacrifices. Sharper than steel, but much weaker.

Found In

  • Obsidian Spire

Looted

The items automatically obtained by a carcass or container.

Obsidian Dagger

A knapped dagger from the volcanic regions of the forgotten lands. It is very effective for draining the life out of wounded creatures.

Found In

  • Naga Warrior Priest

EnemiesSwarms

The main enemies. One level can obtain all of them.

Saurian Scout

A basic, gecko-like lizardman with expert stealth skills. Armed with daggers and a blowpipe. Very easy to kill, but hard to spot. Blowdarts contain neurotoxins that will stun character.

Saurian Warrior

A horny reptoid equipped with a two-handed macuahuitl. They easily cut through shields and armor, but they are slow and uncommon.

Raptor

A slavering wolfish reptile with stealth and speed on it's side. Often ridden by saurians, these hostile animals are used as watchdogs in the subterranean temple. They use their bite and claws to bring down their prey, before letting down their foot on the victim's chest and gutting them. If you are knocked over, get up quick and keep on fighting. They can be killed with relative ease, but they are agile and will often jump over prey to land a good kick in the back.

Bosses

There is only one boss for each level, but it will be randomized between the three.

Naga Warrior Priest

A naga that sits upon an altar and wields two daggers to channel magic. The mage regains mana with every blood drawn from the player. They do not move, from their altar, but will use their tail to constrict the player, and when it comes to it will bite the head off of the unfortunate victim.

Forsaken

Some saurians never see their master. This is obviously one such case, where the warped and diseased forsaken rules the tribe through visions and does not openly reveal itself. Forsaken are despised among pure saurians, so this is obviously a manipulative case. Avoid their several attacks and try to kill it fast, or else the diseases spread from the abomination will spread to you. They are hard to kill, but they are vulnerable when their claws are cut off.

Saurian Juggernaut

A massive komodo-dragon being with great hammers that can kill in one well-placed hit. They are hard to kill due to their thick hide, but are quite slow. With fast and effective blows, they lay waste to any form of protection.
