In Verbis Virtus is a first person view video game that mixes action and puzzle elements in a fantasy setting, in the game you play as a wizard who can perform spells pronouncing magic formulas. The innovation introduced by this game is in the control system: the player must use a microphone to cast spells by actually saying the magic words.
While playing In Verbis Virtus we find ourselves completely unarmed in a dark dungeon that hides many dangers. The only way to overcome the obstacles that you'll find is to learn the secrets of the arcane arts of magic through books that the protagonist finds along his path. These tomes teach magic formulas which, if pronounced correctly, enable you to perform many spells. Using these powers in a creative way the player can solve puzzles, overcome traps and kill the enemies that try to hinder him.

You can listen to the theme here
Short after the first demo came out, we realized we needed a trailer to showcase the innovative game mechanics and fabulous graphics, without relying on people downloading the demo without knowing the game.
As a composer, I tried to push the composition of the Main Theme as far as possible not because of laziness, but to have the biggest possible understanding of the game aesthetics – the music should ideally cover them all in a balanced form.
But since the trailer required a strong music to go with, I decided the time for In Verbis Virtus to have a Main Theme was arrived.
Talking with the rest of the team I gathered the artistic elements developed so far:
- fantasy setting
- the player will face mysterious treats with is wit as much as with its magical powers
I also got to know that the “arabic” feel present in the beginning of the game would have been only one of the thematic elements of the game, so in the end I decided to mention it briefly in the main melody and then in the end of the main theme, serving as an introduction to the beginning of the adventure.
For the beginning of the piece I let the main menu inspire me. I figured this bird’s eye view (Alfier and me had the same idea, since this is also how the trailer begins) and painted a suspended musical texture with three interleaved ostinatos – flutes, second violins and violas respectively. I then brought in a variation of the main theme with the cellos, where the second half comes first and vice-versa. This way its melodic movement conveyed a sense of mystery that was a better fit in this point of the music.
Later, the introduction of drums and cellos and basses staccatos served as introduction to the statement of the main theme in the next bars. From there, the piece just flows naturally to the aforementioned “arabic” ending.
And that’s all for now, if you have any question, feel free to ask using the comments below!
In the next post, I will present you the brand-new battle track, along the purposedly developed combat music engine. Stay tuned!

You have my vote on Greenlight! Really good work with the voice-recognition. I'm definitely looking forward to the new demo and release, and I hope you guys can make it on Steam, too.
Finally got around to trying the demo and I'm stunned by your level design. Seriously, it's a work of art. Also, the voice-casting system works great and never failed to understand me.
Can't wait to chuck fireballs at beasties (and possibly chuck the beasties!) using my voice! :D
Damn this looks so amazing! The theme is great too, tracking :D
Wow! Just completed the demo and I very impressed. Keep up the great work.
The graphics and the idea is cool but game doesnt recognise my microphone and on the top it says input not found.
Wow.It has almost been 2 weeks but no response... -.-
If you want a fast reply, why don't you simply send a direct message or a mail, instead of writing a comment?
If you experience any issue with the microphone recognition please find this log file:

We're working hard to support each and every sound card in the market, sending the log file will help us provide a better experience to everyone. Thank you!!
Crap now I need to get a mic T.T
Awesome main theme! The idea with voice-recognition seemed so innovative I had to try it out. It was really great! Best of luck to the team :]
Some of the issues which occured for me:
- The game didn't recognize any sound output from my logitech USB headset
- The "beam of light" spell had quite a high-pitched noise, which started to pain my ears slightly as I got stuck on a puzzle
this is quite promising. i hope the action part will be dominant.
