Here its nearly okay. You should take a look at the level of detail in games like Gothic 3. Everything there looks like it has a story. What story have this boxes? Maybe they are full of goods (look at the link). =)

I tend to agree with you because its nice to have objects in a specific place for a reason. I love games where the mappers take time to do that. Make meaning of almost everything.
