Dead by association.

D.B.A plays out in Spain on a small Peninsula on the border to France, there is 3 towns on the peninsula which was mostly inhabited by tourists and foreigners from France and England. One of Spain’s leading science facilities was located on the northern coast of the peninsula, it was very important and had some military security mostly to protect them from activists.

Year 2020.

The war between Russia and Ukraine was raging on and seemed to have no end but a world war had not yet broken out still everyone was on their toes. One morning when a Russian warship ventured a bit close to the Science lab while chasing a small Ukrainian boat a warning was made by the Spanish guards. They asked the Russians to turn back immediately but instead they fired at the Ukrainian boat and sunk it. Another warning was made in panic that it the Russians did not turn back they would sink the warship, the Russians did not have the chance to answer or turn before they heard an explosion on there ship. They fired back and turned the entire science lab into ruins killing everyone.

The explosion on the Russian ship later turned out to be a engine failure, a flaw that the Russians never admitted. Instead they accused Spain to have attacked them and marched troops into France to guard the border claiming that they were defending their fellow French brothers from the war determined Spanish.

Everyone was focusing on the war situation and forgot about the toxic wastes that leaked into the sea from the science lab. After a few weeks people along the coast started getting sick, the hospitals were flooded by feverish patients. Later experts found out that it was directly lethal to bathe or eat fish from the sea near the northern coast of Spain or staying to long in boats or on the docks could be very toxic. People burned with fever and after a while their hearts stopped, what the doctors did not expect was that they came back with rabies like behavior. Basically yes, zombies. Being close to the infected is always a risk, even breathing close to them or getting there blood on you can get you sick but bites and scratches can really get you in trouble. A good immune system and antibiotics can do a lot for you but going into the sea, drinking from the wells along the coast or eating the fish is suicide.

After the Virus spread the French and the Russians blamed Spain and the border was watched day and night. Even though the virus already had spread into Spain the government decided to quarantine the peninsula as well. Thousands tried to escape and most died, some made it and others died outside the quarantine and spread the virus to France and across the Mediterranean Sea.

The government of Spain advised everyone to stay indoors and barricade themselves trying to starve the infected and wait out the virus. And some of the people on the peninsula did but no help came, after a few months everyone ran out of food and had to start going out for provisions, small shelters and markets was created. The Infected showed no sign of starvation and people had to make a choice.

Accept the new world, scavenge for food and try to make it Inside the quarantine in a raw new form of civilization, or find a way to make it out.
