Conquest of Elysium 3 is an old school fantasy strategy game. You explore your surroundings conquer locations that provides the resources you need. Resources needed vary much depending on what character you are, e.g. the high priestess need places where she can gather human sacrifices, the baron needs places where tax can be collected and where iron can be mined. These resources can then be used for magic rituals and troop recruitments. The main differentiator for this game is the amount of features and special abilities that can be used. The game can be played on Windows, Linux (x86 and raspberry pi) and Mac OSX (intel and powerpc).

So I waited almost a year before downloading all the updates and trying again. It was pointless. The game is just as bad today as it was when I first downloaded it.

I'm curious how the team that created Dominions 3, the best game I've ever played, created this abomination?

There is no thought into design or AI.

It's just horrible and really should be removed from availability because you are just screwing people by selling it.

Anything more specific?

I take note of "I'm curious how the team that created Dominions 3, the best game I've ever played, created this abomination?"
I think that says a lot. If I remember right, CoE was created before Dom (altho CoE3 is the latest). Dom3 is 90% multiplayer and CoE3 is 90% solo. I dont find it surprising that anyone who has been a long-time Dom3 lover isnt happy with CoE3.

The design comment is standard for Illwinter linux games.
The AI comment bothers me abit. Im loving playing teams with Ais. I wonder if he bothered playing into the higher levels, or trying the challenges.

Personally I've enjoyed both Dominions 3 and Conquest of Elysium 3, but the premises of the game are so very different that going in and expecting them to be variations of the same game will doubtless lead to disappointment. There were a number of Dom3 veterans who bought CoE3 and did not enjoy it one bit and you seem to be one of them. Then there were others who liked this game more than they liked Dom3. I'm sorry you were disappointed by the game.

As far as design, there is quite a bit of thought put into it, but not all of it works as expected, perhaps. With regard to the AI, it will never play at the same level as a human opponent. The CoE3 AI is better than some AIs I've seen and not as good as some others.

You know, I love this game and think Dominions 3 is so horrific and terrible a game that, if there is a world record for worst video game, Dominions 3 would take the cake. But that's just my opinion. Plus, if you want a challenge, try a tiny map against the max number of AI's on the max difficulty, on Empire. As a witch.

There are some difficulty levels even above that altho they do not show up on the menu. But there are some downloadable maps at the www.CoE-3.com forum that create some totally insane scenarios.

It also has a challenges that takes you thru various scenarios that get harder and harder.

And be sure to try out the Team play. A whole new game there. :)

I agree about the team thing, forgot to mention that. And I'm going to need to check out the downloadable maps. Thanks!

Gandalf said in a Dom3 thread once something to the effect that 90% of Dom3 SP players love CoE and 90% of MP players hate it. That made me check out CoE, when I got around to it, and I'm glad I did. I originally located Dom3 when I was looking for a more modern version of "Master of Magic," and I really like Dom3, but CoE is much closer in spirit to MoM and I love it.

MoM-like features:

Heroes with built-in spells.
Dungeon locations to explore, with monsters and treasure.
Tile-based movement.
Wildly different magic systems per-player.

In some ways, CoE3 also reminds me of the old DOS game "Dungeons of Silmar" which I've been looking for for a long time too. In that roguelike game, you get to pick one character class (space marine, drummer, vampire, troll, gymnast, etc.) each with very different abilities and early/late-game strengths. CoE3 does that too, only even better.

I've already bought two copies of CoE and may buy more.
