"Black Days" is a standalone game based on the Quake Engine aimed to make a fully new singleplayer campaign, featuring revamped graphics, new weapons and items, and a lot of other features powered by the DarkPlaces sourceport for Quake.

Goes to show, one can heavily modify the engine and perhaps even be able to compete with some of today's engines right? Surely its much better than re-inventing the wheel in this day of age.
