The Battle for Wesnoth is a Free, turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme, featuring both single-player, and online/hotseat multiplayer combat. Fight a desperate battle to reclaim the throne of Wesnoth, or take hand in any number of other adventures. Easily modifiable. You can even download other users' add-ons from the main menu.
The Battle for Wesnoth is a graphically lush reimagining of hex based strategy games of the 80s and 90s such as the launded Panzer/Fantasy General. Say goodbye to tired WWI and WWII imagery and step into a carefully sculpted and vibrant landscape that evokes a high fantasy theme. And kudos to the team for including more than elves, orcs and humans, the campaigns in the package include a variety of unusual but charming alternative races such as merfolk, dragonkin and an affable necromancer trying to survive. This game is very well balanced and the interface is clear, presenting pertinent information via mouse overs and a helpful index accessible in game. Should you clear all the included campaigns or long for new creatures to do your bidding then let me mention about the in game mod browser that is both easy to use and brings an instant wealth of user created new monsters (Factions) and new game rules (Eras). Many free games are lacking in features, graphical quality or are otherwise incomplete, but the Battle for Wesnoth stands triumphantly above the crowd and is a worthy contendor for all your free time.
For people who like turn-based strategy games this is a must-play game.
The interface is superb providing all the needed info in a glance, displaying movement range, the possible out come of attacks, stats of the warriors,...
Due to its great replayability, this is definitely one of my all time favorites.
One of the best Free and Open Source turn-based strategy games around - Hell, it bests commercial offerings at every turn, unless you're looking for the latest 3D graphics. A long development history plus a comprehensive toolkit means that there are tons of campaigns for you to play, all for free! Download to your heart's content new campaigns that contain new artwork (much of it anime-style), units and more. Up for a multiplayer session? Play online in multiple configurations; lots of races and classes from which to choose! Easy to learn, difficult to master! If you enjoyed Fire Emblem or Shining Force titles, Battle for Wesnoth will bring back many fond memories.
While its quite challanging and overall pretty, i cant help but dislike staring at all the AI players making moves for most of the time. I know this is common for turnbased games but without fog of war and quite alot of units to move and each unit executing the same animation multiple times while attacking its just too much waiting =(.
