When to start a dev blog (Forums : Development Banter : When to start a dev blog) Locked

I've been developing a game for about a month, and I wanted to start talking about it. However, I wanted to start a dev blog to explain how I design different features in the game. Unfortunately, these features are all 'pie-in-the-sky' mechanics now; they haven't been implemented at this moment. My game's still in the prototype phase (i.e. cube prefabs make up the environment, basic player movement is set up), so I'm not confident enough to show off any screenshots of the game so far.

As you can tell, however, a part of me still wants to go ahead and start talking about it. I know I'm being cagey about what my game actually is, and that's the problem. I want people to know more about what I want to put into the game (e.g. how I want to handle enemy AI and earning experience, what the player will be able to do through the game, how I'm handling death). Should I listen to my gut and talk about my development process, or should I keep quiet until I have something to show to the readers?

I think you can talk about future things every time you want. If someone is really interested in your project he/she also wants to know what you are going to do in the future. So why not? :D

The question should be "when should I publish my dev blog?"
Because you should already have a dev blog. They're an important tool for tracking your own progress.

When to publish a dev blog depends on your target audience. Is your target audence avid indie game players, or more main stream gamers?

Go for it and publish your ideas and vision. However, keep in mind that the audience out there is not going to be excited by walls of text or screenshots with just color coded rectangles on it. If you feel the urge to talk about your game development, go ahead, it often sparks new ideas or makes you aware of problems you might run into later. But, don't expect other people to be excited about what you are talking. Most of the people out there are only interested in fancy looking screenshot stuff and videos.

cheers.
