[The following is a conversation by Some Important Guys circa 2002, as I think it went]

SUIT # 1: Hmm... it seems our business is failing. [Everyone at the table nods.] What do you propose we do?

SUIT # 2: I have something... underhanded in mind, but almost GUARANTEES success.

SUIT # 1: Go on...

SUIT # 2: Well it seems the mod community is responsible for Half-Life success. If we could make a cash-in sequel-

SUIT # 3: -With impressive graphics, of course?

SUIT # 2: Of course. As I was saying, if we could make a cash-in sequel we could do MINIMAL work, while ensuring maximal profit.

SUIT # 1: But how do we ensure people would ACTUALLY buy it? Wouldn't people see through this trick?

SUIT # 2: It gets better. We will hype it much, and then about a month or so before its promised release date, we will delay it and blame it on a scape goat. Repeat as necessary, and people will be itching to have it!

[The other suits grin evilly]

SUIT # 1: And in the meantime?

SUIT # 4: Perhaps we could release cash-in's of currently existing Half-Life mods?

SUIT # 1: Excellent. Meeting adjourned, gentlemen.
