1) It's so the player can sort of pour his personality into Gordon and be able to play the way they want to. That's what made the first and second games so immersive. If Gordon started speaking, that'd ruin the experience, at least in my opinion. That's why franchises such as Half-Life and Mario have been so successful. Players want to be the main character, and they stroke a chord in the measure of that luxury by doing it so well. 2) Methinks that was thrown onto the cutting room floor and removed from the game. A lot of things turned out that way, such as the Hydra from the E3 demos. But hey, maybe they'll release a Special Edition DVD or a Director's Cut and throw those things back in. Let's cross our fingers. Either that or download one of the game mods out there that change the Half-Life 2 gameplay. EDIT: And the reason those are outdated is because they didn't really update the media after the game was released. That first link you posted says that they're "Exclusive Half-Life 2 screenshots", showing that they were probably taken a year or two ago, before the gaming was actually released. Just a hunch. Thanks. A director's cut would be nice (Maybe it would be creator's cut or something because it's a game) |
