Would there ever be a chance for a torrent download system for mods on this site --

Why not? That wouldn't be such a bad idea. Although you can probably do that already. Just upload a torrent of your mod for download. |

We could always have two download systems: the standard one and the bit torrent one. Bit Torrent takes the load off the web server and puts it on the user, which is good for the server, but eats up user bandwidth like crazy. The standard download style puts more strain on the server, which can create slower download speeds. All of this really depends on your IC. If you're dial-up, don't use bit torreent; if you're hig-speed, then I'd say use it.
Ha ha ha. Go get yourself AVG already. |

If mods want to do it, let them host torrents for their mods. I think we should stick to the basic Direct Download service that ModDB offers, because instead of having to wait hours, maybe even days, for a person to seed a much older download, you can get it instantly. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

At first the download service was going to be bittorrent based, but after we thought about the length of time seeding requirements. it works just as well to give direct downloads -- Mod DB Old Timer |

I think the option of a torrent system is good, because it can be faster, more reliable and less of a strain on the server. |

I own McAfee and it does not block any torrents =/. It used to block IRC but you just need to uncheck a box to unblock that. Check your blocked ports. Edited by: Failure |

I think its a good idea, and if you submit them to P2P sites, they would attract more attention aswell. Assuming thats possible. -- uwu

As an option to the download dialogue, I don't think it can hurt as a new feature. The problem will be people not seeding things, but there's always the direct download option for that. Like a few people said, mods can just host their own torrents. But as a unified ModDB thing (eg modDB is your one stop modding shop etc.) it would be a nice extra feature, and all the trackers could be kept in one place - modDB - so if you want a torrent, you can find them easily. --

Apparently, some people didn't see this quote, so I'll go ahead and post it again. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

Yeah, I saw it. But seeding isnt' really a problem if there's also a direct download link - if there's not too many seeds, you just click the other link. It's a mod teams responsibility to seed, not ModDBs, which really is the beauty of it. --

In case some people miss this statement, I'm gonna go ahead and post it again. Seriously though, I think that alerting mod teams that it ought to be their responsibility to maintain a healthy torrent is a great idea. |

Torrents are great if people are fair enough to seed torrent after they download it. It fixes the problem of looking for servers near your country - I'm from Slovenia and I usualy have to seek servers that are near (Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, Neatherlands...) which could be a big problem sometimes, if I'm downloading sth. from overseas it can take a hell of a lot of time + many servers have limited download to sth like 100kb/s if you do not subscribe (and pay)... --

If something is popular enough then torrents are a good idea. I don't see mods here being popular enough for torrents. I'd be doing it at my site if the mods had enough download activity. |
