Hi folks,

I'm looking to see if any of the experienced people here think Solar Flux (PC) would be a good candidate for modding? We've toyed with the idea of making the game more accessible so that assets can be easily replaced, or even just adding a simple level editor to allow people to create and submit their own levels. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I would appreciate any feedback given, as we're not experienced enough with modding to know if this would be worth the dev time or not.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul
I think any form of modding you add to your game will increase the games life and popularity.
Any access you would want to open up would give your players a chance to create and that's a big selling point for sandbox games.

Your two key ideas, the ability to work with assets and levels is the best start, you would need to ask your players what they would like to be able to change or customize in your game to get a more focused idea of what to add.

The ability to customize the missions past the core gameplay might give your game a chance at popular offshoots that requires the primary game to play.
Adding plug and play scripts (like lua in garrys mod) is also a sound and well proven option modders jump at.

But to be honest you would be best asking your fans and player base directly, perhaps mention possible modding potential in your next news release / patch

Thanks for the feedback TKAzA!

Unfortunately, our interaction with players, especially on PC, has been quite limited. This may change once we get on to other platforms, including Desura!

We'd need to do a fair amount to open the game up to modding, as our tools currently package everything up in to a tight bundle, which means either developing the tools for others to use, or finding a way to not pack the game like this. The former would be my choice, as it just lays it all bare, and people can do as they wish. I just need to try and talk nice to our engine guys and see what they say! :)

Cheers,
Paul
