What are you expecting from a mod? How good it has to look? How good story it needs to have? How good gameplay it requires?

How much a good story/gameplay/looks compensate bad story/gameplay/looks? What if everything is mediocre? Which is the most important aspect of a mod? What if this most important thing was bad in the mod, but everything else were good?

I think the most important aspect of a mod is the gameplay. I dont expect much from a mod, only that it changes SOMETHING to make a tired out game feel playable again.

For me, there has to be blood, killing, objectives, and outstanding visuals. Even though i have about 85 HL2 mods im watching, im very picky at what i choose. If the models/maps/skins are good, i automatically watch it...

I dont give a damn about a storyline b/c singleplayer doesnt interest me at all :P

MajorPest got it right on... it really comes down to the gameplay.

I think there should be a larger distinction between modifications and total conversions.
An example of a modification is where somebody takes vanilla Half-Life 2 and adds a couple of new weapons or styles of movement, etc.
An example of a total conversion is where a team put together a completely new environment and theme simply using Half-Life 2's engine, not it's content.

I think I'm talking more about the total conversion mods or nearly total conversion mods...

It should feel like a totally new game. Nothing should really seem the same from the game and the tc.

There's also the nearly forgotten genre of the MiniMod, which is a small, maybe one level TC.

Like what carni's 'the hunted' series would be if they were mods for quake rather than standalone games.

i like single player, everything seems to be multiplayer only, how many people do you usually see on these mods?

Single Player mods are awesome, pity there are hardly any of them around. And nobody makes bots either, which make multiplayer TC's boring and pointless.

I think multiplayer modders gets some team and they make the mod for themselves to play and maybe for some couple other people who also got interested.. if they're lucky or unlucky.. the mod gets popular and then everyone is making Contrary Stakeout clone mods...

Single people makes singleplayer mods, because they got no friends to play games. But if some single person decides to have friends to play games, then you get a single/multiplayer mod.

*blinks at Jimi*

Well, you do have that cannabis thing goin'... :D

Anyways, I think a TC should at the least leave few to no traces of the original game's logos. It oughta be made to feel like a complete experience.

Yea... I have it goin' ;D But that does not mean I smoke it. Why would I smoke such delicious food? I don't even like food much, but I do like food with cannabis in it. Then again, this thread is not about food or lifestyles... This is about mods, what do you want in a mod and that sort of stuff.

For discussion about someone's lifestyles and choices... you can post comments in that one's profile or send a private message if it's something you don't want others to see.

No, Grappling hook is a mod or a patch, or at best a partial conversion. Minimods are very different. They are total TCs, with all new content and gamestyles, but just small. The name is perhaps misleading, but it was first coined to mean this about 6 years ago.

[EDIT]

What exactly did I get an award for?

the name is misleading because a mini mod sounds less than a mod. and a mod as is isnt even a total conversion. so calling a 'minimod' a small TC isnt appropriate. nevermind that, but it isnt unbelievably short as in 1 level. i think there are too many names for mods and too many "what does it take? how to make fun? and what do people want?" kind of questions being asked.

if you're going to mod, do it and stop gloating over it, if you aren't, stop pretending like you are and get off your high horse.

As i said, it's a little misleading. The name, however, has been around for a few years and most people understand what it means.

Have any examples of your usage mauve? I've never seen it used as anything but small partial-mods, small features added maybe.

teamgames are for those who want to blame their losses on others. Play deathmatch you wuss.

sure. These all come from the Quake community, since that's where I'm based. All of the following have been called minimods by their creators, and all are miniture TCs, in that they are completly different from the game they are based on.

Hurried Descent (by Akuma)
Jaws (by FrikaC)
Snowed (by FrikaC)
8 Ball (by Coffee)
Helix (by me)

There are loads more but I can't remember right now. Here is a pretty good article on the concept. iI gives you an 'example of my usage'. It's the first article on the page...

Planetquake.com

[EDIT]

Somewhat amusing thing. I'm quoted in that article (I used to be known as skinski) as saying "I never start a mod I can't finish in a weekend". How times change. I've been working on my current mod for two years.
