Can anyone here reccomend some good mods that do not require the game(s) they were based on? Thanks |

look at some of the doom mods, i think a few of them changed the engine a little, with it being open source. But as he said, they wouldn't be mods if they're standalone. Kinda an oxymoron. |

Grass is one, so is Open Quartz, and a ton of Wolf mods out there. -- < insert subject games here >

Would America's Army count as a stand alone...it is based on the UT engine right? |

No, America's Army is a stand-alone game developed by the US army, NOT a Unreal Torunament or UT2k3 mod. It contains 0% content from those games -- < insert subject games here >

When it first came out....they said it was built off the UT engine though. |

Get to the point. What stand-alone mods are there? |

Using engine technology to make a game is VERY different than making a mod on a game's core. Only GPL'd game engines (Quake, Wolf, etc) can have mods standalone. -- < insert subject games here >

Basically its using the Unreal engine. Not having 2 do anything with Ut04 or any unreal games. Its just the basic mechanism that they developed the UT games with, but with there own code ,sounds, models, etc, but just using the features the Unreal engine provides, Like the large scale of maps, and other things. |

actually its still a mod. Its just that they included the games core with the final, so you don't need to have the game itself. |

You mean Gunman Chronicles? I've never seen it free and Valve bought them up to shelf them -- < insert subject games here >

Quake II is a popular engine for developers to create their own stand-alone mods with. It went open-source roughly two or three years ago, I believe. --

I never found a way to compile it and actually use it. |
