Hello everyone,

I've been working on a multiplayer shooter for Source for a little while now, but I've come to a fork in my road - Should I make the mod for Half-Life 2: Deathmatch as opposed to just Source?

Here's my thought behind this, and here is where I need your input because I don't know the details;

If I release this mod in X-months time, and people want to play it, what does it take for them to get a server going? Is it expensive since it's not rented from Gameservers? will it be unreliable because it will be running out of a persons home? I've never really given it much thought.

Then the idea hit me - what if its a mod for HL2:DM (the mod is very simple tbh) Then ppl could just get a HL2:DM server from gameservers and apply the mod! It would make it much simpler, but this comes at a cost of power from the source engine since HL2:DM runs off an older version (or does it get updated as well, so I could have the most updated version of source available to me?)

What do you think I should do? Should I go for just a plain Source mod and hope ppl find it worthy of making a server from the ground up?
Or should I make it a HL2:DM mod to increase availability? And would doing so force me to use an older version of Source?

Any kind of input you have is greatly appreciated!

I am interested in that question too.
Also, if it's an hl2:dm mod, will the players need to buy hl2:dm in order to play it?

Yes they will need HL2:DM in order to play the mod.
