You know what I am sick of - hearing people flame mods because they don't have a coder...

Every time one of those mods pop up, the first thing people point out is that they haven't got a coder.

Drop it already.

you're absolutely right, thank god you can pick coders that work for free from the trees, just like that *snap*

and have it die cos they had no idea wtf was goin on!

Depending on the type of mod, It can only take a few months ;)

I hate it when 90% of mods on this site has a leader that does jack (and also have no coder)

mods NEED coders, especially hl2 mods, and mods for doom3 or bf2 or farcry

coders like to do their own thing. not yours, man

oh we're pissing on #2, forgot that wasn't allowed *bows down and scurries back to the trenches*

You know, there's a polite way of saying "stop".

I wasn't aware that there was.

Anyway, usually something with physics (Havok) or anything with very technologically advanced sections of a game, Coders are REQUIRED.

The technology doesn't matter; HL also has a coder-crisis

Pr0stSh0cKeR ! The alligator!

Anyways, if you don't like whats going on learn to code and join a mod.

Coders are like the bass players of bands. (If any of you are in a band you might know what I mean)

Real bass players are hard to find - bass players in general are hard to find (at least in my area). But many bands find them because a guitar player says "Hey, I will try playing bass because we need one".

Then what you get is this bass player who just plays the song, not the instrument. He never really becomes a good bass player because he doesn't have the mindset to play it.

With that said, I am a pretty good bassist, but I can't code worth jack. It's a shame the skills aren't actually transferable...

more like, lazy people with no skills trying to start a mod they couldn't dream of making. But close!

I'm not talking about mod leaders - I'm talking just coders that sort of float around the mods.

Most people can't finish a mod though - I totally hear ya. I am one of those people. I've had a failed mod of my own. But at least I took it as a learning experience and I will be better organized if ever I feel the desire to start another project.

Coders required for mods? Well for most, yeah, but not for all. You can easily make an SP mod without needing a coder.

And I agree on the sentiment that there are so many people starting mods, thinking that it's easy and just a short task to make it, but not having specific team members shouldn't limit one's creativity, either.

People just randomly shouting for staff annoy me, yes. People, with proper documentation, a good attitude and who're doing something themselves as well, requesting staff; I've got absolutely no problem with. In fact, I wish there were more of those!

And coders isn't the most important position per se. It depends on the emphasis of the mod. For my mod (Starlabs) I don't need a coder to make it. The coder position is optional and allows me to implement some extra features which are very welcome additions. But the coder is by no means the driving force. The driving force is me, the leader and the person who does nearly al level design.

For mods that arent map packs or weapon replacements the coder is the pivotal role in the whole shibang. I suppose if all people wanted was more mappacks you could get away with that but nowadays additions are few and far between for obvious reasons.

I personally would like to see more "mods" and less "full conversions" of games.

Unreal Tournament had it going with all the little add-ons for the 'unreal windows' type thing.

Depends on your idea of mod, really... If you're using custom textures, custom voice acting, model replacements and some other stuff (think of the note system from poke646) then I would consider it a mod, even though there would be no coding involved. (The whole note system was just a combination of entities.)

To me, a mod definitely doesn't come down to something that needs to have modified /custom code in it.

A map pack is just a bunch of levels, usually with little story, made up out of purely original content of the game.

Aug 18 2005 Anchor

ive never heard of a mappack mod getting big.. But I suppose someone could prove me wrong by linking me to some good released ones.

Carni: Todesangst was pretty big for HL, definately among the best single player mods out there. It did have some coding especially in T2 but I think the first was pretty much all done by the leader and one guy.

They hunted was a single player mod that didn't have oodles amount of coding changes. USS Darkstar was just a map pack iirc, but huge none the less. There was heart of evil, probably the best single player mod. Way back one of the first single player mods to really set the bar was Chemical existance. All these had little coding changes if any and I'd call them all successful single player mods.

It bugs me too that even mods with a coder seem to aim for a year's work before releasing, that's just unrealistic for most people, more mods should just aim for a few months and actually get something done, to work on something for a whole year without getting paid is far more daunting. A few more fun mini mods would be nice, but so far for hl2 there's nothing that's tempted me away from CSS since everything is still being worked on, HL2 has been out a LONG time now however.
Ah well, at least dystopia must be out some time soon.
